If you have a smart meter and are experiencing symptoms like headaches when you’re in a certain room, insomnia, or increased joint pain, this article is for you.

The amount of radiation that emits from today’s smart meters is enough to induce physical changes in our bodies.

Let’s take a closer look at some of those changes, but first, let’s figure out why these changes happen in the first place.

What Is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter is an electronic tool that records a building’s electric energy consumption in time periods of an hour (sometimes less).

Smart meters transmit this data back to a utility company for the purposes of monitoring and billing.

Smart meters permit two-way communication between itself and the utility company’s central system.

What Causes Someone to Experience Symptoms from a Smart Meter?

Smart meters may appear to transmit negligible amounts of radiation over time, but that isn’t the case.

While in operation, they typically send out strong levels of radiation several times each minute.

These radiation signals can occur without interruption and in two directions – sometimes upwards of 200,000 times a day.

So what does this do to the human body?

People differ with respect to their body sizes, composition of minerals within their bodies, the density of those minerals, and the amount of electrolytes within their bodies.

As a result, some people are far more susceptible to electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation than others.

And if you have a high heavy metal load, the metals in your body can act as an antenna, attracting EMF radiation whenever it’s present.

Usually, most people don’t actually feel symptoms through exposure to EMF radiation.

Despite this, EMF radiation that reaches the human body can permanently alter our cells after enough time has passed, leading to symptoms later on in life.

This sort of radiation has many hazardous health effects that can be cumulative, taking anywhere from 5 to 10 years of exposure to finally surface.

Common Smart Meter Radiation Symptoms

1. Stress and Irritability

Studies such as those published in the Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy have shown for decades that EMF radiation can lead to a variety of neurological and psychological issues.

These include mood changes, increased feelings of stress, and increased levels of irritability.

Some people complain that different rooms or buildings affect their mood. As it turns out, EMF radiation may be to blame – whether from a smart meter or wifi

2. Skin Problems

Some victims of severe EMF radiation report suffering from skin problems such as rashes and facial flushing.

Such individuals have been exposed to high amounts of this radiation for an extended period of time and have become hypersensitive.

3. Arthritis and Body Pain

Arthritis is a collection of pain-inducing and debilitating physical conditions. It leads to stiff, painful joints caused by excess inflammation in the joints.

Beyond arthritis, many types of bodily pains are solely, chiefly, or remotely caused (or worsened) by inflammation.

EMF radiation frequencies can alter and damage the nervous system, and many of the other symptoms of EMF radiation have inflammation as an accompanying problem.

Once the smart meter is removed, people have reported less inflammation and fewer body pains.

4. Sleeping Problems

A harmful effect of EMF and RF radiation gaining more attention in the scientific community is radiation’s effects on sleep quality and duration.

An article published in 2004 entitled “Effect of A Nighttime Magnetic Field Exposure on Sleep Patterns in Young Women,” showed that night-time exposure to EMF radiation was more damaging than day-time exposure.

The brain operates through countless electrical impulses, and our sleep patterns and cycles are regulated through such impulses.

Sleep processes can be altered due to EMF radiation frequencies delivered at intermittent or random intervals – such as those emitted by smart meters.

5. Heart Problems

According to www.DrPawluk.com (an expert on magnetic field therapy), EMF radiation can reach human and animal tissues easily, including heart tissues, with no sensory indications.

The cardiovascular and nervous systems’ responses to EMF are very complicated, ranging from reactions by cardiac muscles, reflexes regulated by the central nervous system, and even by blood vessels.

There are a number of heart problems that have been associated with EMF radiation exposure. Some of these cardiac conditions include:

  • Cardiac arrhythmia (can lead to nearly instant cardiac death)
  • Bradycardia (slowed heartbeat)
  • Tachycardia (quickened heartbeat)
  • Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs) and Premature Atrial Contractions (PACs) / aka Heart Palpitations
  • Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter (irregular or quivering heartbeat)

6. Eye Problems

There are also some harmful effects of EMF radiation to our eyes that have been reported and studied.

Some symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity include burning or painful eyes, reduced visual acuity, floaters, pressure within or behind the eyes, and cataracts.

7. Seizures

Seizures are another bodily condition that involves our electrical signals and impulses.

The brain has billions of nerve cells (neurons) that send and receive electrical signals. Seizures create abnormally high volumes of these electrical signals within the brain.

This series of neuron misfiring and superfluous electrical activity leads to alterations in individuals’ overall awareness and their bodily movements.

Those with epileptic seizures could have more acute negative reactions to EMF radiation. Epilepsy is a kind of brain abnormality that causes irregular periods of unstable and atypical electrical activity within the brain.

Besides these 7 common symptoms, other health effects have also been reported in relation to smart meters:

  • Headaches
  • Vertigo
  • Fatigue
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in Ears)
  • Sinus Problems
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea
  • Leg Cramps
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Endocrine and Thyroid Disorders

If you experience any of these smart meter radiation symptoms, get a radiofrequency (RF) meter and measure the amount of radiation emitting from your smart meter.

Then get a cover for it that significantly decreases radiation output. We have a shopping guide you can read here.

This is what they look like:

If you’re convinced your health effects are related, you may be able to petition your utility company to switch to an analog meter.

Some states have programs where they will do this for free. Others charge a fee.

Many of the symptoms mentioned above are directly related to how close or far you are from the smart meter because distance dictates exposure level.

  1. I have installed the above smart meter cover and I’m not so sure the EMF intensity didn’t get worse, not to mention that the smart meter is right behind my bed and bedroom wall. I have no other place to put the bed. The meters were advertised as eliminating the radiation not only on the outside of the house, but on the inside as well. Is that true? I am going crazy in this house of which I have only lived for 3 months, and my brain feels like it’s about to blow up. Most people think I’m crazy. I had an electrician change out 13 dimmer switches in the house. I’ve ordered a WIFI cover and EMF meter. Please help!

    • Hi Terri,

You still need to shield the interior area that shares a wall with the smart meter. I go into detail about how to do that in this article – https://beatemf.com/smart-meter-protection/. The quickest and easiest solution would be to hang a shielded poster frame like this one behind your bed. It’ll reflect that radiation back outside, and then you have the cover to take care of outside exposure.

You did good by getting ride of the dimmer switches. Instead of getting a WiFi cover, I’d get rid of the WiFi router all together and switch to a wired router and use ethernet cables to access the internet. As sensitive as you seem to be already to EMF, I don’t think a simple cover for your router will do it. You need to get rid of the WiFi entirely and go wired.

  3. I believe I’m being affected by EMFs from my smart meter that was installed this summer. I started having skin issues this summer and about a month ago, headaches and hot flushing in my face. I rarely ever get headaches and they are not like these – tension. I am beginning to notice a pattern of when I am sitting near the area where the smart meter was installed that my headaches come, within 10 feet, opposite our den area. I am in the process of trying to get it removed. Thanks for doing the research and helping people with your information!

  4. We moved into this house 5 years ago, and I immediately started having joint pain and sleep issues. I also started hearing what sounds like a radio left on downstairs when I would try to go to sleep upstairs. Since then the constant headaches, floaters in my eyes, irritability etc have become major issues.
Could the meter be transmitting something and making the sounds?

    • I have a smart meter right on the other side of my wall right next to my head when I’m sleeping . My dog has all kinds of health problems now Andi have headaches cronic depression and joint pain back pain musle pain and no energy at all. I’m afraid . If I cover it the radiation will come at me worse I feel. I can t move I live with my dad after a divorce from an abusive 30 year marriage. so can I get the meter moved? Please someone help me.

      • It’s up to your utility company whether or not they’ll move it. What’s better is to ask them to install an analog meter. They usually add a monthly fee to your utility bill for it, average $25 or so, but it’s well worth it. Switching to an analog meter will eliminate your RF exposure (from that source, at least).

  6. Hello
I live in a cottage which has no insolation due to it being old. Well I have been having lots of headaches and skin problems and trouble sleeping and feeling depressed and always tired and sick feeling. I happened to walk on the far side of the cottage which I have never done..no need to until I needed to pick weeds that I pulled from the back and realized all the meters are all on my cottage 😢 outside wall and now I know why I’m feeling sick 🤢 also no insolation on the walls and my bed is along the wall and all the meters are next to we’re I sleep.
I already deal with a medical.
I’m very concerned for my health.

  7. We don’t have a smart meter yet, but a router was installed outside of our house last month. It’s supposedly not “talking” to anything yet, since smart meters in our area haven’t been installed, but I’ve had headaches, brain fog and lack of focus from the hour it was put in. I can’t find any information on just the routers (we’re opting out of the smart meter)–do you have any information you can point me to?
