Wi-Fi networks are now widely available everywhere you go. No matter where you are, there’s a chance you’ll be within range of a Wi-Fi network’s radiation.

This radiation from Wi-Fi can cause health issues over time.

Consistent and close exposure to Wi-Fi router radiation could range from cellular damage to dizziness. It’s recommended to keep a safe distance of 40 feet from your wifi router.

Want to know more about Wi-Fi router radiation safe distance? If yes, then keep reading.

Wi-Fi Router Radiation: What Distance Is Safe? Complete Explanation

Even though the wide availability of Wi-Fi routers may appear harmless, it can result in severe health issues. Wi-Fi routers emit the same radiation as mobile phones, radio towers, and computers.

These electromagnetic emissions can negatively impact the human body after long-term exposure (ignoring the safe distance recommended). The effects of early and mild exposure to electromagnetic field radiation could result in:

Headaches

Dizziness

Loss of focus

However, consistent exposure and ignoring safe distances could lead to more severe and irreversible issues such as:

Calcium overload

Cellular DNA damage

Potential cancer

Therefore, one of the best practices would be to keep yourself at least 40 feet from Wi-Fi router exposure. This way, you can keep yourself secure from these harmful radiations.

The second best option is a shield for your router like the Signal Tamer:

Why Is Distance from Wi-Fi Radiation Important?

The human body does have a biological response to exposure to Wi-Fi radiation. So, maintaining a safe distance from such radiation is vital for health reasons.

Not maintaining a safe distance from Wi-Fi radiation can significantly cause your health to decline. So, here in this section, we have shortlisted some of the most significant health issues that you may face due to close Wi-Fi radiation.

Cellular And Organ Damage

Radiations emitted from Wi-Fi and mobile phones have certain evidence to cause damage to mitochondrial DNA. These radiations are known to induce oxidative damage to mitochondria that breaks down the strands of DNA.

Since these DNA strands are intertwined among two individual strands, studies have proven that close exposure to these radiations can cause the strands to “unwind.” Not only does radiation cause damage to DNA, but it also affects the levels of calcium in the body.

Any change or damage to either of these mentioned elements in the body could cause a decline in one’s health.

Please note, however, that these effects vary depending on the type and frequency of the radiation.

Oxygen Absorption

Usually, Wi-Fi uses a 60 GHz frequency to function. Consistent and close exposure to this frequency range can cause oxidative stress.

Chemically speaking, the Oxygen molecule is labeled as O2, whereas an Oxygen atom is labeled as O only.

Therefore, to form Oxygen, two atoms of Oxygen need to be held together. When exposure to such radiation is emitted, it causes these molecules to hover. The hovering around the electrons and molecule leads to them spinning instead of combining and being held together.

The output of the hovering and spinning of the molecules directly affects the absorption rate of Oxygen into the blood. Altering the absorption levels in the blood also affects the rate of hemoglobin.

Potential Cancer And Tumors

Mobile phones and Wi-Fi are the most significant sources of radiation emitters we are around throughout our daily lives.

It has been proven that women who carry their mobile phones in their bras are more likely to develop cancer around the spot their device is in. This is because this spot is mostly and consistently in contact with radiation.

Cancer is not the only terminal and chronic disease caused by radiation emitted from nearby Wi-Fi. Brain tumors have become increasingly common since widespread Wi-Fi use became common.

Bottom Line: Keep a Safe Distance

The convenience that Wi-Fi provides is hard to give up. Fortunately, you don’t have to. The best solution is to switch to a fully wired setup using ethernet cables.

Still, I know people don’t want cables crawling through their house. The other option is to place a shielded bag over your router such as the Signal Tamer.

Such a protective shield allows you to get within that 40-foot range that’s considered a safe distance from your wifi router.

That said, I will always advocate for replacing your wifi router all together, and go the hardwired route with ethernet cables. That way, you eliminate wifi router radiation completely.

Do you have a wireless router at home?

If so, you might want to consider getting a shielded guard or cover for it.

Let’s talk about why…

Why You Should Use a WiFi Router Cover for Your Router

Due to the global pandemic, internet connection has become a necessity in every household. Many people heavily rely on WiFi for their education, business, communication, and entertainment.

But even though WiFi is something that we can’t live without, it can also be the very thing that brings harm to our lives.

That’s because the act of using WiFi involves radio frequency (RF) radiation – a type of radiation that can be cancer-causing when exposed for long durations. According to scientific research, this WiFi radiation can lead to DNA damage, infertility, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Other kinds of milder symptoms include increased levels of anxiety and inability to sleep (which is why you definitely don’t want to put a wireless router in your bedroom).

The truth about the dangers of WiFI can be quite frustrating, especially since we can’t completely eliminate its usage.

But the good news is there are solutions to lessen the risk of radiation. The best way to reduce EMF from routers is to use a WiFi router guard.

A WiFi guard acts as a shield that blocks the RF emitted by a wireless router all throughout the day. Such covers are made out of a metallic screen mesh material that contains 90-98% of the radio frequency radiation.

As a result of using one, you can go from 100% exposure to just 2-10% and enjoy better sleep, a stronger immune system, less headaches, and more as a result.

How a WiFi Router Guard Works

A WiFi router guard acts the same way as a Faraday cage, which is an enclosure that blocks electromagnetic fields and radio frequencies.

A Faraday cage is made of highly conductive covering which creates an external field that distributes any electric charges coming from the inside.

The WiFi router guard does the same. It is also made up of conductive material – like stainless steel or copper – which is then made into a screen mesh box or covering of sorts.

This shielded screen acts as a barrier between you and the RF radiation. When the RF is emitted by the router, it “hits” the metal shield and essentially bounces back within itself instead of blasting you.

On the downside, using a WiFi router cover can reduce the range of your signal, but not so much that it affects the people in your household (because wifi signal easily penetrates walls).

It’s just that your neighbor two houses down may no longer be able to tap into your wifi connection, which is actually another benefit in my book.

Things to Consider Before You Shop

Size

Not all WiFi router guards are created equal. Some covers may be too small for your router and others can’t accommodate the wires and power cords.

So you definitely want to take measurements of your router before purchasing a guard.

Cage vs Fabric Pouch

Depending on the size of your router, you can choose to purchase a WiFi shielding cage – like the WaveCage – or a shielded fabric pouch like the Signal Tamer (we’ll talk more about those in a bit).

Both products do well in significantly lowering radiation emitted by wireless routers.

The advantage of a fabric pouch is that it can accommodate different router sizes, various router brands, and large antennas. A shielding cage may have limitations when it comes to bulkier routers and may not fully enclose the router’s antennas.

But again, measuring will help you decide which type of covering is best for you.

RF Reduction Rate (Aka Check Decibel Rating)

You’ll want to check the attenuation rating of any router guard to see how much radiation is blocked by the product.

Before purchasing, look at the product page for some sort of decibel rating – measured in dB – to see the capacity of that particular material’s ability to block radiation.

You want to aim for an attenuation rating of 15-20 decibels give or take a few. That means that the product can effectively 96 – 99% of the radiation emitted by the WiFi router.

My WiFi Router Guard Review: Favorite Picks

The WiFi Router Cover

The best feature of the WiFi Router Cover is that it’s very easy to setup. There’s really no assembly required at all. The standard size measures 12 x 9 X 4 inches, complete with 2-inch wiring cut out, but they have a larger size as well that’s 12.5 x 12.5 x 5.5 inches.

buy now

The Cover provides ample room for ethernet cords and power cords, thus ensuring the efficiency of the device’s performance. It’s constructed of high-quality stainless steel that reduces 90% of radiation.

Using this cover may reduce your signal range by 10-25%, but it won’t cause a slower internet speed.

And the signal is too low (like during stormy weather), you can simply remove the lid of the router cover once in a while and that usually solves the problem.

The Signal Tamer

Unlike the box-style cover, the Signal Tamer looks more like a pouch that is placed over the router. The Signal tamer is made of a shielding fabric mesh that is adjustable and allows for air to flow easily within the pouch.

Through the help of this device, the radiation from your router is reduced by 90-95%, without sacrificing internet speed.

I personally like the options the fabric option provides as it comes in a larger size for bigger routers and an extra-strength version made with stronger mesh.

Product tests show that with the signal tamer, radiation levels are reduced to 100-150 mV/m. Once the Signal Tamer is off, the radiation levels would spike up to 1400 mV/m – very high levels.

Another notable thing about the Signal Tamer is that you can adjust the amount of its leakage. This means that you can control whether you want more signal to come out or less.

learn more about the signal tamer

The WaveCage

The WaveCage is designed to reduce radiation strength while still allowing for a stable signal. This product is described to be leaky, particularly because it allows a small amount of radiation to penetrate.

But even though that’s the case, it still reduces your router radiation exposure up to 95%.

The WaveCage comes in three sizes to accommodate nearly any sized router. Its materials are made with sturdy metal to last a lifetime.

It also has two large holes at the bottom part to allow power cables and wires to pass through.

This WaveCage is not only perfect for WiFi routers, it can also be placed over smart devices, two-way radios, and cordless gadgets.

learn more about wavecage

Best Low Power Wireless Router

If you’re unsure about using Wireless router guards, a good alternative would be the JRS Eco 100 wireless router. This device is considered the best low radiation router that can still offer high-quality performance and a stable internet connection.

The JRS Eco wireless router is a 5 GHz WiFI router built with its unique Eco-WiFi operating system that is compatible with all types of devices. With this router, the radiation that stems from it can be decreased by more than half, sometimes much more.

The Eco-Mode setting of this WiFI router is what sets it apart because when there are no devices connected to the WiFi, the router will not emit any radiation at all.

This setting also prevents and minimizes the pulsing (aka massive spikes in radiation output) that happens with other routers.

CHECK OUT THE jrs ECO LOW EMF ROUTER

How to Make a Wifi Router Shield

If you don’t want to purchase a ready-made router guard or a low radiation router, you can try to make your own. The steps are simple, the materials are easy to obtain, and you can customize it to fit the specifications of your router.

To make a DIY WiFi router guard, here are some things you need to do:

Get the dimensions of your router in order to buy the correct size/amount of protective material that you’ll use to wrap around it.

Obtain a type of radiofrequency shielding material. The most suggested material would be a copper mesh. Stainless steel and nickel are also good. You can find this at most hardware stores.

Simply wrap the shielding material around the modem until it’s secured. You can use aluminum foil tape to bind the sides together.

Voila! It’s that simple. I’ve found that most DIY WiFi router guards shield just as effectively, but never assume – always measure.

Take before and after measurements so you can know for certain what reduction in radiation you’re working with.

If it’s not up to par with something like SignalTamer, try double layering the material, but doing so will reduce your signal range even further so bear that in mind.

The Best Wired Only Router

The best way to avoid the router radiation is to completely eliminate the wireless connection in your home. You can still access the internet through a Wired Only router.

This type of router allows you to access the internet by hooking up your device with ethernet cables connected to the modem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still connect to the internet with a shield on my router?

Yes! Some WiFi router shields may affect the range of your WiFi connection (sorry, piggybacking neighbors), but they still allow you to connect to the internet and won’t decrease your WiFi’s speed.

What’s a safe distance to keep from a wifi router?

The ideal distance between you and your WiFi router is at least 6 feet to lower the radiation that your body absorbs. But really, the farther the better.

Do wifi router guards really work?

Yes! Various test results have proven that using a WiFi router cover significantly decreases the amount of radiation that is emitted by your router. The router guard also prevents bursts – or pulses – of RF radiation.

Many people don’t even realize wifi radiation protection is a thing.

But whether obvious or not, the wireless technology that powers our internet, phones and smart devices can be both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, it allows you to connect to the world around you at all times, but on the other, it allows this world to connect to you. With this comes a whole host of ethical and health concerns that, frankly, the average consumer is not being told about.

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding whether or not WiFi and other forms of wireless technology are safe. Even the studies conducted on these topics tend to contradict one another.

And official authorities? They disagree, too:

The U.S. government says WiFi is safe for adults and children.

However, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determined in 2011 that radio frequency energy, including RFR from cell phones, can cause cancer in humans.

So how’s a guy or gal supposed to know what’s true?

Before you can make an educated decision on what you believe (regarding its impact on your body), you need to first understand how wifi operates – because that’s where the potential problem lies.

Understanding WiFi Radio Waves

Wifi uses radio waves to send and receive internet data. Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation – a kind of energy that can travel through the air and the earth.

Wifi primarily operates via a specific type of radio wave known as microwaves.

And yes, it’s the same frequency of microwaves used in your quick-cooking kitchen appliance.

Wifi uses radio waves in the microwave range of 2.4 gigahertz. The micro waves are emitted by small antennas built into whatever the device may be whether a wifi router or smartphone, etc.

Ok…but microwaves aren’t a big deal. I use one every day. They make cooking Ramen noodles a cinch!

Well, let’s talk about that.

First, let’s look at how exactly microwaves cook food…

Microwaves and Wireless Radiation: How It Affects Humans

Giant magnets and superconductors aside, microwave ovens work on the principle of electromagnetic radiation, which is just a fancy way of saying they use invisible waves of energy to heat food.

Most microwaves emit these waves at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, but you can also find some that operate at lower frequencies (and thus cook food more slowly) or at higher frequencies (which heat food more quickly).
But the truth is…microwaves do A LOT more than just heat your food.

They destroy nutrients in your food by causing the molecules they contain to vibrate and collide with each other, creating friction and heat.

The friction and heat create new compounds (such as radiolytic compounds that are created when food is microwaved).

Some of these new compounds are not only harmful, they are carcinogenic.

Now imagine living in a microwave, and YOU are the popcorn. It sounds far-fetched, but it’s not because guess what else operates using 2.4 GHz besides microwaves?

Cell phones, cell towers, bluetooth, smart home technology, wireless printers, wifi routers, laptops, tablets, your home’s electric meter, wireless earbuds, those new Wifi-enabled appliances, need I go on?

And that vibration, friction, and heat that microwaves induce doesn’t just happen to food. They happen within our cells, too. In fact, microwaves – both the actual kitchen appliance AND all wireless tech that operates via literal ‘micro’waves – also encourage the spawning of free radicals, which can damage cell membranes and DNA, leading to cancer and other diseases.

WiFi Radiation Overexposure Symptoms

The radiation produced by WiFi routers has been linked to all kinds of health issues, including headaches and skin rashes. In fact, the World Health Organization officially classified any level of WiFi radiation as a possible carcinogen in 2011.

But while most people assume that overexposure to such non-ionizing radiation are mild and benign, that’s not always the case.

Some people have experienced a change in their mental state—a general feeling of uneasiness and anxiety. In some cases, it’s even led to chronic depression and illnesses.

Sadly, the impact is even worse on children.

Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of wireless radiation.

(And don’t be fooled into thinking that, just because you or people you know don’t experience symptoms, that means you’re in the clear. Some people are more sensitive to such things than others.)

That’s because the part of the brain responsible for absorbing information, the cerebellum, is still under development until we hit puberty.

During childhood, the cerebellum is tasked with absorbing the signals sent by our senses, so it can be said that the “wiring” in this area is always being updated. The signals sent by wireless devices interfere with this process, which comes with a whole host of negative side effects, including headaches, ADD, and even hormone disruption.

How to Detect and Measure WiFi Radiation

Although RF radiation is an invisible threat, it can be measured and therefore “seen.”

In fact, I highly recommend you get a reputable meter (I use the Trifield TF2) to see what you’re actually dealing with.

There are exceptions to every rule, and you don’t want to spend a lot on protective solutions if the levels in your environment aren’t all that high in the first place.

To measure WiFi radiation, you’ll need a meter that specifically measures radio frequencies. Electric and magnetic fields are also an issue, but in this article, we’re focusing exclusively on RF.

There are a few different ones out there like the Cornet and others, but for most people, you’ll never face a scenario that the TF2 help with as it measures electric fields, magnetic fields, and radio frequencies all in one.

No matter which meter you use, the first step is to identify the RF source – and remember that includes anything that operates and/or communicates wirelessly.

Once you know where the RF is coming from, place the meter at least 6 inches away on a non-metal surface to take the reading.

Always record your measurement and use the peak value (not average). The reason you want to write these down is so you can remember your “before” levels and compare to “after” levels once you’ve put your protective solutions in place.

With the right meter, it’s really as simple as that!

Before we get into protection products, I want to address a question I get a lot about the differences between wireless and smartphone EMF.

WiFi Radiation vs. Cell Phone Radiation

WiFi and cell phone radiation can be thought of as two sides of the same coin because, in essence, they are the same thing. They both operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency range.

The main difference lies in how they affect the body.

Two factors affect their potential negative impact – the power output of the device and your distance from it.

Regarding power output, here’s an example:

Cell phone radiation is much worse when you’re in a “roaming” area because the power (and therefore radiation) spikes as it strives to connect to the nearest cell tower. The same thing can happen when your battery is low.

As for distance, cell phone radiation can be seen as more of a threat because of how close it has to be to your body in order to operate it. Whereas something like a wifi router can be placed at the total opposite end of the house from your bedroom, for example.

The frequency range is the same. But how that frequency affects your body can be different. Hope that make sense

Ok, on to the good stuff…the solutions!

Free Ways to Protect Yourself Against WiFi Radiation at Home

You don’t have to break the bank to live safer with wireless tech. While certain protective products are super convenient (more on that in the next section), you don’t HAVE to have them in every situation.

Here are a few no-cost ways to lower your exposure to wireless radiation:

1. Shield your wireless router somehow

This can be as simple as placing a metal mesh trash bin over the router or fashioning a covering for it with aluminum foil.

I did that when I was on a super tight budget (and before I had a fully wired setup), but I hated it. Any time one of my kids (or a pet) would accidently rub against it, it made a crackling sound akin to nails on a chalkboard. When able, I upgraded to the SignalTamer and was very happy with it.

Here’s a list of some other effective wifi router guards.

Now, I have a fully wired setup, which is really what you want to aim for. Ultimately, you want NO wifi in the house. All you need is ethernet cables and some creativity in tucking them away/disguising them (if you’re worried about how they look, that is).

At the very least, turn your wireless router off at night and when not in use for long periods of time.

2. Keep Your Distance

Get in the habit of keeping your distance from wifi-emitting devices. Bear in mind these include cell phones, wireless routers, smart devices, all bluetooth connected devices, wireless printers, AirPods, and more.

As for an exact distance that’s safe, you need a meter to tell you that, but the farther the better. This is because radiation strength dissipates quickly with distance.

3. Never Work with Your Laptop on Your Lap

I know it’s in the name, but please don’t use your laptop actually on your lap. You’re talking direct. skin-to-tech, exposure at an extremely vulnerable part of the body – your pelvic region. That’s, of course, where your reproductive organs are housed, and research indicates they are especially sensitive to radiation exposure.

But even if you disregard its impact to those organs, there are other reasons not to use a laptop like that. I have another article that details that you can read here.

4. Use Airplane Mode

Whenever you’re not using your wireless device (and aren’t expecting urgent calls or texts), switch to airplane mode. Doing so eliminates your connection and therefore your radio frequency signal, which is the source of the radiation.

WiFi Radiation Protection (Paid Solutions That Actually Work)

Now let’s discuss some paid solutions. Here are some things that actually decrease the amount of wifi radiation around you:

Good shielding cases for your cell phone, laptop, and tablet (NOT those chips or ‘neutralizers’ – again, check out the scams article if you need clarity on that)

Corded phones in place of cordless DECT ones

Metallic screen shielding covers or boxes for your wifi router (I like this cage or this fabric bag that slips over it)

A shielded cover for your smart meter (yep, your home’s utility meter sends monthly electricity usage to the utility company wirelessly! Check out smart meter protection guides here if you need more info).

Air tube headphones in place of wireless earbuds

Now for the gold standard:

Albeit pricey, the best way to protect your body against EMF radiation is to sleep in a shielded bed canopy. It’s the only solution that provides 99.9% shielding over your entire body for 7-8 hours straight – or ever how long you sleep.

And sleep is the absolutely most crucial time to protect yourself as many of your body’s detox and ‘reset’ processes happen during this timeframe as it prepares for the next day.

I personally like the Dream Canopy, but WOREMOR is good too.

But of course do your own research. There are plenty more shielding items that can effectively and measurably lower your RF exposure.

Final Note: Beware of Scams Involving WiFi Radiation Shields

I’ve touched on this briefly, but just be careful of EMF scams. They’re easy to spot – just look for terms like “harmonizer, neutralizer and scalar energy.”

And for the most part, stay away from necklaces and bracelets that claim to protect you from wifi radiation by ‘harmonizing’ it and rendering it neutral.

Also, if you see an ad for a device that you “simply” plug in and magically all the EMF and RF in your entire home will no longer be an issue….run far, FAR away.

With that said, dirty electricity filters are indeed plug-ins, but they work solely to revert stray currents in your wiring back to its original, clean current. Those are completely legit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do WiFi routers emit radiation?

Yes they do. Exactly how much RF a router emits depends on factors like signal strength, how many devices are connected at once, and more.

What are some of the effects of WiFi radiation?

WiFi radiation symptoms can be minor or so intense that they interfere with daily life. On the “better” end, it may only cause slight headaches, restlessness, sleep disruptions, and such. On the more serious end of the spectrum, overexposure to wifi can lead to unexplained chronic conditions, dramatic mood changes, and cognitive dysfunction to name a few.

Dealing with EMF is hard enough…but a threat to your wellbeing when you’re just trying to enjoy music via headphones is just unacceptable.

If you don’t already know, wireless headphones (most of which operate via bluetooth) AND wired headphones blast your ears with radio frequency radiation. You can click through those 3 links to reach the details of each case to better understand how and why you need a safer alternative.

Luckily, air tube headsets are the perfect solution for everyone suffering from EMF sensitivity or those who want to avoid future invisible damage.

If you’ve never heard of them – don’t let the terminology confuse you!

Air tube headsets look just like your average earbuds (so no worries about looking like a tinfoil-hat wearing weirdo). But instead of transmitting music through metal electrical wires – the sound transmits through tubes of air – hence the name.

A doctor’s stethoscope works on the same principle. In this case, air tubes eliminate EMF radiation from riding along the wires and straight into your ears, which is way too close for comfort to your brain.

The only problem is there are a ton of air tube products out there, so how do you know what’s legit or just a cheap knock-off?

With in mind, today I want to share the 5 best air tube headsets available in 2021.

Let’s get to it…

5 Best Air Tube Headsets

If you’ve been a friend of this site for long, you know I don’t give my stamp of approval to very many brands. As a certified EMF consultant, I’m obligated to putting your safety first – not making money off marketable products that don’t actually work.

If you’re new here, be sure to check out my EMF Scams post so you know which things to avoid.

Ok, so the EMF-free earbuds I’m about to show you are all pretty much made the same. There’s honestly not a lot of difference between them.

But I want to tell you about all of them because each company runs sales at different times, so one may be a good bit cheaper depending on when you’re reading this.

Side Note: Please consider supporting the following small business owners by shopping directly at their websites instead of Amazon.

Ok, here we go…

1. DefenderShield EMF Radiation-Free Air Tube Kids Headphones

These airtube earphones from DefenderShield are a little pricier, but they come from brilliant audio engineering specialists, ensuring they deliver a high fidelity sound.

Hollow tubes are air-filled, which helps increase space for delivering a superior acoustic audio quality while contributing to tone development – and of course, eliminate RF radiation from traveling up to your eardrums.

The tubes are highly flexible and durable. But one of the most-liked features is the tangle-free braided nylon cord because, seriously, who’s got time for that?! And kids especially don’t want to sit there and untangle a knot of wires before every use.

Besides that, these headphones are lightweight and adjustable for a comfortable fit. When your child isn’t using them, they fold up for easy packing or storing on the go.

The built-in microphone is hands-free operated. Audio controls help play/pause, answer calls, and skip track.

Hollow air tubes are made from a premium silicone material that resonates with soft acoustic sound and ensures extreme durability.

One of the most remarkable features is the ability to pinch to mute (Pinch2Mute) the audio without worrying about damaging the tubes.

Speakers provide a clear & crisp sound, and I really like the magnetic earbuds that allow you to wear the headset around the neck. Even though the headset is lightweight and pretty compact, you won’t have to worry about losing them, even if you go for a run.

For easy control, a small remote with an integrated mic features only one button that is more than enough to answer calls, skip track, and increase/decrease volume.

Considering the price to value ratio – these headphones won’t only keep your body protected, but they’ll also make sure that your bank account stays intact…always a good thing

Final Thoughts

Having to use a speakerphone isn’t always the best way to handle calls. Besides lack of privacy, background noise makes it mission impossible when you’re in a crowded place.

Regular wired headphones – even though they’re not wireless – are a no-go because of the whole ‘metal is conductive’ thing, and the metal inside the wires conducts RF from your device straight to your ears.

Fortunately, we finally have a product in the form of air tube headsets that provide a better alternative and eliminates harmful EMF radiation from devices.

The technology isn’t new – but it’s effective, which is really important. But when it comes down to air tube headset choice, I’d stick to these 5 options.

And remember, the anti-radiation aspect of them are mostly the same, so it really comes down to color, design, earbud vs over-ear headphone, etc.

I get this question all the time…

How do I know if I have a smart meter?

So I figured it’s about time to stop answering every email individually and have an in-depth article that answers any questions you may have.

We’ll talk about what smart meters look like, how to definitively identify them, how they work, etc.

So let’s go…

What Is a Smart Meter?

A smart utility meter is not just a digital meter. It is a meter that’s set up to send information directly to the utility company so that they don’t have to send a meter person to your home to read the meter.

Some companies provide digital meters that aren’t smart, BUT all smart meters are digital.

How Do Smart Meters Communicate?

Smart meters communicate electronically (and wirelessly) with the utility company through a process known as automated meter reading, or AMR.

This is normally a one-way, meter-to-utility company type of communication. It’s supposedly very accurate and a fast type of communication that allows for important information to get to the utility company quickly.

The data includes not only the usage amount for the customer but also aspects such as notifications of power outages and monitoring of the general quality of power being used.

If there is an outage, the smart meter lets the utility company know immediately so that something can be done about it.

Now…those are the “advantages.”

But the factor that allows wireless communication is radio waves, and the energy emitted during transmission is known as radio frequency (RF) radiation – and it’s problematic.

Are All Digital Meters Smart Meters?

Not necessarily.

While smart meters are always digital meters, not every digital meter is smart.

Smart meters have the distinction of being able to communicate directly with the utility company about power usage, outages, and in the case of smart meters that have two-way communication capabilities, information on billing, sales of new equipment, and high-usage alerts, among others.

A Few Key Differences Between Smart Meters and Digital Meters

If the meter has wireless components, it is a smart meter. Some common types on the market today include:

AMI (advanced metering infrastructure)

AMR (automatic meter reading)

PLC (power line communication)

“Radio off” digital meters (more rare, but you’re lucky if you have this kind)

If your utility company has recently installed or “upgraded” you to a new meter without your consent, look for any of the above abbreviations, along with an FCC ID (usually beneath a bar code).

That’s a telltale sign that it’s smart.

But they may not have a visible bar code/ID like this one and still be smart:

If that’s the case, then you need to look up the manufacturer and either call or download their data sheet if it’s available online and look for the clue words (more on that below).

What an Analog Meter Looks Like and How It Differs From a Smart Meter

Analog meters, or electromechanical meters, usually have five small clock-like instruments on them that each have dials that spin and turn.

They may have a glass casing and you are therefore able to see the dials spinning as you look into the meter itself.

Here’s an example:

Analog meters often have other numbers as well but they are usually very tiny and are numbers that only the utility company knows how to read.

Smart meters, on the other hand, are always digital as previously mentioned, and very easy to read.

One word of caution:

Note that just because the word “smart” isn’t actually seen on the meter doesn’t mean that it isn’t a smart meter.

If it’s a digital meter, you can automatically be suspicious of it and go ahead and assume that it is – as non-smart digital meters are rare.

Complaints About Smart Meters

More and more people are learning about the many dangers of smart meters, the main one being the high amounts of radio frequencies (RFs) they use to operate.

Maybe you’ve heard of the risks associated with smartphone radiation? Smart meters utilize the same frequencies, and pulse periodically at even higher levels than cell phones.

In fact, they emit low levels of radiation up to 14,000 times per day, every day of the year. This is why so many people are choosing to opt out of smart meters when offered this alternative by the utility company.

If you’re like so many and don’t have that option, here’s how to protect against smart meters.

Besides the radiation issue, anything smart is easily hacked. Would you want information like when you’re home, when you’re showering, when you’re sleeping, etc to fall into the wrong hands? Yeah that’s a big NOPE.

Which brings me to my next point…

How to Get Rid of a Smart Meter

Getting rid of a smart meter can be difficult because they’re so much more convenient for utility companies. That’s why they’re “upgrading” to them all across the world without homeowner’s consent.

You can be certain power companies care much more about what’s convenient for them than your health, well-being, or education opinion.

Ok, I’m ranting…back to business…

So there are a few things you can do:

Check with the utility company, ask them if they have an opt-out program, and take the option when you can. Keep in mind it usually comes with an added monthly fee to cover the cost of sending a meter reader to your home each month.

If you can’t opt out, voice your concerns with any official or representative who will listen and let them know how you feel about smart meters.

Contact the utility company and deny them permission to come onto your property to change out the meter.

Be there when the utility company arrives and tell them that they are not allowed to trespass on your property.

Most of all, don’t give up. This is the key to getting what you want in the end.

Still, I understand some people just don’t want to put up that kind of “fight,” so refer to my guide for how to shield your smart meter.

SO…How Do I Know If I Have a Smart Meter? Here’s How.

If you don’t see a typical ‘digital clock’ type face but little round clocks/dials instead (like the ones pictured below), you probably have an analog meter. This one is an example of what they may look like in other countries:

If your meter is digital and has an FCC ID (followed by a string of numbers) printed somewhere on the meter’s face, it’s smart.

Lastly, run an internet search for the manufacturer’s name listed on the meter’s face, along with the words “user manual” or “product information.” If you see terms like “radio frequency” or “wireless” anywhere in the manual or data sheet, it’s a smart meter.

If you’ve looked around the site, you’ve probably noticed we’ve been talking a lot about smart meters and the health concerns associated with them.

Today’s post is all about smart meter covers that shield your home from the radiation they emit.

How Do Smart Meters Work?

Smart meters were created to make everything regarding our electricity consumption, bills and payment more convenient…

For the utility company, that is.

No more paying an electricity man to come out and read your meter.

That’s because smart meters are able to communicate wirelessly, sending data about your electricity usage directly to the station.

Sounds innocent enough, so what’s the reason to shield against it?

Glad you asked.

(By the way, if you’re not sure if you have one, here’s what smart meters look like.)

Why Your Home Needs a Smart Meter Shield

Smart meters release radio frequency (RF) radiation in millisecond blasts as much as 9,600 times per day.

With enough exposure, radio frequency radiation can induce serious damage to the human body and is classified as a Group 2B possible carcinogen.

Also, smart meters work thru a built-in switched mode power supply. As a result, it increases the amount of dirty electricity in our homes.

Countless reports have surfaced about adverse reactions to smart meter radiation, including:

Ear Pain

Dizziness

Hyperactivity

Sleep problems

Headaches

Heart palpitations

Anxiety

Fatigue

Concentration and memory loss issues

Nervous system issues

Studies have also proven that microwaves from devices like smart meters have the ability to activate voltage gated calcium channels or VGCC.

These channels are embedded in the cell membranes of your body.

When activated, they release ions that cause the discharge of nitric oxide in our cells and to the power generators of the cell – the mitochondria.

The release of these ions is very harmful because they get converted into hydroxyl free radicals.

Such radicals cause chronic diseases by altering proteins, cell membranes, and even DNA.

Some studies have even shown a significant increase of inflammatory markers like TGF-Beta -1 in people whose homes use smart meters.

Long story short, it is imperative that we protect ourselves from too much exposure to microwaves and RF radiation.

That’s where a smart meter shield comes in.

How a Smart Meter Cover Works

Radio Frequency waves can be blocked in two ways:

Reflection

Absorption

First, let’s talk about reflection.

We can do this by using aluminum foil and a metal sheet. The term reflection simply refers to reflecting RF waves in another direction.

Whereas with absorption, the shielding material absorbs the RF waves.

Such materials include specialized absorbing paints and minerals like shungite.

A smart meter cover works via reflection and blocks about 90% to 99% of radio frequency.

What to Look for in a Quality Smart Meter Cover

Before buying a smart meter cover, you need to know what to look for to make sure you’re getting something that actually works, instead of spending money on a useless mesh box.

First, check the material used.

Stainless steel is the gold standard in the industry, but aluminum works well too.

Some cheaper covers might be made with nickel or copper, but they have durability issues and aren’t uniquely suited for this purpose like stainless steel is.

Next, look at the product’s attenuation rate.

Attenuation rates pertain to the rate of diminution of power with respect to distance along a transmission path.

Basically, it’s how much radiation it blocks according to how far you are from the source.

You don’t want to block the signal 100% because the smart meter still needs to be able to send data to the utility company.

Blocking radiation completely is nearly impossible anyway – it’s all about reduction.

A quality smart meter will block around 98% of the radiation.

Last is the installation.

Of course, most of us want something easy to assemble. Fortunately, installing a smart meter cover is pretty straightforward.

I’ve yet to find one that was too complicated and couldn’t be installed in less than 30 minutes.

Best Smart Meter Shield as of 2022

If you google the term or do an Amazon search, you’ll find several options, but most effective in my opinion is this one below by Smart Meter Guard (an aptly named business):

Frequently Asked Questions

Do smart meter covers block radiation from getting into the house?

No, if your smart meter shares a wall with a high-traffic living area like a bedroom, living room, or kitchen, you’ll need to shield inside as well. You can learn how here (starting at point #4).

Do the shields interfere with the power company’s ability to read the meter?

No, that’s why the cover is mesh and not solid metal. The tiny hole size of mesh allows just enough to get through so the utility company can still get their readings. If you’re still concerned, give your power company a call. These shields have been around long enough that most utility companies are familiar with them.

Do smart meter covers work?

Yes, absolutely! They reduce up to 99% of radio frequency radiation. They are ideal for homes whose smart meter is near a patio, garage, or outdoor play area where people are near it on a regular basis.

Once you realize that smart meters give off radiation just like WiFi does, you may wonder how they compare.

That’s what we’re going to look at today.

Now normally, “battles” involve good vs bad, but in this case, it just might be bad vs badder.

Yes, I’m aware that’s not a real word, but you get what I’m trying to say…

Let’s get started!

Understanding Smart Meter Radiation

We have smart devices all over our homes, and now even our utility meters are smart, meaning they no longer have to be read as they can communicate wirelessly.

If you’ve ever wondered what kind of consequences that has, you have a right to be concerned.

All wireless and “smart” devices operate using radio frequencies, and the energy emitted is known as radio frequency radiation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared that this form of radiation – sometimes lumped together with the term ‘EMF’ – can cause symptoms such as vomiting, fatigue, headaches, and even depression.

To put things in perspective, think of your microwave – how it nukes food in a matter of seconds? It uses the same radio waves – or ‘micro’waves – as smart meters. Except smart meters run 24/7, and they pulse, meaning their radiation levels peak off the charts, so to speak, every few seconds.

Understanding WiFi Radiation

As previously mentioned, all wireless tech – as long as full communication settings are enabled – emit radio frequency radiation.

Just how much it emits depends on various factors such as battery power, signal strength, and distance from whatever device it’s communicating with or “paired” with.

Most people use various sources of WiFi all throughout the day, many times all at once. This being the case, there’s a cumulative effect at play that few people realize is there.

Because it’s not just our cell phones – it’s our routers, our wireless printers, our bluetooth devices, our smart home products, and the list goes on.

And all of these devices utilize radio frequencies similar to that of a microwave oven in the 2.4 GHz range. Together, they have a much larger impact on the body than if we were just exposed to one single source at any given time.

High amounts of this radiation can cause dysregulation of cells, changes in brain patterns and sperm count, mood alterations, and more. And all of THAT is made worse by the fact that WiFi is usually on 24 hours a day, seven days a week – in one form or another.

And since wifi penetrates walls easily, it’s not like you can just go to another room to escape it.

Now to the comparison between smart meter radiation vs wifi.

A few things to note…

Why Smart Meters May Have a Greater Impact Than WiFi Radiation

When you look at various smart devices and compare their energy levels to one another, it can give you some idea of how bad the radiation’s impact may be on the body.

Smart meters run 24/7 and are therefore constantly emitting radiation. In one report, it was determined that smart meters can impact the body 160 times more significantly than cell phones when comparing cumulative whole body exposure.

Considering that cell phones have been shown to increase your risk of getting cancer, this is not exactly good news.

One of the problems associated with smart meters is that in many areas of the country, customers are forced to get one.

This is because utility companies benefit from you having one since they no longer have to come to your home to “read” the meter. They can simply do so from their offices.

Whether it’s more accurate than an analog meter is debatable, but utility companies love these smart meters and make it increasingly difficult to refuse them in the forms of fees and red tape.

The #1 Difference Between Smart Meter and Wireless Radiation: Choice

When it comes to the difference between smart meter and WiFi radiation, it mostly boils down to one word:

Choice.

When it comes to cell phones, you can decrease your usage and even purchase a type of phone that has a lower SAR value. You can also implement other ways to decrease cell phone radiation like utilizing airplane mode.

With smart meters, they’re installed on your home even if you don’t want it in many cases. And the only changes you can make to decrease your exposure involve financial investment.

Considering that smart meters emit pulses of radiation up to 14,000 times per day, every day of the year, that is a lot of radiation you’re being exposed to essentially without your consent.

If you’re lucky enough to have a choice with your smart meter, choosing a standard analog one is always your best bet.

If you can’t, here are some ways to protect against smart meter radiation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do smart meters work?

Smart meters are digital devices that record your usage electronically and then wirelessly send that straight to the utility company.

What can I do if the city insists on installing a smart meter in my home? You can place a protective barrier of some type between you and the meter. Some examples include flex shields, which can reduce up to 95% of all EMF radiation. If the meter faces your backyard, patio, or anywhere else where your family hangs out or children play, you should get a smart meter cover.

If you’re looking to move and you’re aware of the growing threat of EMF, you may be wondering…

“Where are smart meters banned?!”

I know if I could I’d LOVE to live in an RF and EMF quiet zone. But truly, it’s hard to escape nowadays.

Still, there are some areas that are more “analog” friendly than others, so let’s talk about that…

Smart Meter Opt-Out States

Because of the uproar associated with smart meters – mostly due to the radio frequency radiation emitted by these devices – some areas across the country are allowing citizens to opt out of them.

Unfortunately, smart meters are being installed across the board without any input from consumers in many areas, which means consumers have no choice but to accept them as part of their lives.

Or so they’re being told.

If there’s any good news, it’s that some localities allow opt-outs so that customers can keep their analog utility meter or at least get a digital one that doesn’t send data wirelessly.

Following is the current status in various parts of the United States.

States where analog meters are still offered in lieu of smart meters:

Maine

Arizona

California

Texas

States where you’re allowed to keep your existing meter as the opt-out:

Georgia

Hawaii

Consumers Energy in Michigan

States that leave it to the utility companies to determine opt-out eligibility: Florida, Maryland, and Nevada.

States that have banned opting out of smart meters:

Fountain in Colorado

DTE in Michigan

Central Hudson Valley in New York

Port Angeles in Washington

Areas that require you to have smart meters: Washington, D.C. and the state of Pennsylvania.

All of the remaining states either do not provide for analog opt-outs or their policies are unclear or unknown as of now.

If you don’t see your area listed, just give your utility company a call and ask what their policy is regarding smart meter opt-outs.

Now let’s look at some of the latest news regarding these attempts to offer opt-outs to customers.

Local Governments in California Ban Smart Meters

As of this writing, more than 50 California municipalities have issued moratoriums and even outright bans on the installation of smart meters.

This includes numerous cities, towns, counties, and reservations.

The unfortunate thing is that utility companies sometimes ignore these measures and install smart meters anyway on citizens’ properties.

Still, the more people who resist this effort by the utility companies to insist that everyone receive a smart meter, the more successful we’ll be.

A Win in New Mexico

Like many other states, New Mexico had a victory in 2018 when it won the right to postpone the installment of smart meters in many of its major cities.

The decision did not say that smart meters wouldn’t be installed in the future; it just said that there was going to be a moratorium for a while until the issue was studied further.

The cities that won the victory include:

Alamogordo

Albuquerque

Clayton

Deming

Las Vegas

Lordsburg

Ruidoso

Santa Fe

Silver City

Tularosa

These are both examples of how the attitudes of citizens can make a difference.

Stopping the installation of smart meters in your area of the country is important, and it’s a lot easier when you’re vocal and persistent about the issue.

Much like other issues in the country, making your voice heard can produce results. After all, it’s the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Smart Meters in the EU

The European Union has recommended that all participating countries agree to a 100% participation in switching to smart meters, but so far not all countries are on board.

While some countries have aimed for a 100% participation rate from their citizens, others have rejected the efforts and have very low participation rates.

Here’s a list of some EU countries and their citizen participation rate:

Sweden: 100%

Finland: 99%

Estonia: 98.2%

Spain: 91.27%

Denmark: 80%

Germany actually voted against having a national smart meter roll-out plan and doesn’t encourage (or discourage) its citizens from getting smart meters.

The same goes for countries such as Croatia, Cypress, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Ireland.

When the EU made its recommendation to convert over to smart meters, its goal was an 80% participation rate by consumers, but the average number is well below that.

To date, only about 37% of EU citizens have been equipped with smart meters, with many countries now fighting against the recommendation.

So Why Do People Want Smart Meters Banned in the First Place?

People don’t want smart meters for two main reasons:

First, they emit dangerous levels of radiation linked to headaches, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, hormonal changes, and many more symptoms.

Since smart meters emit more radiation than smartphones – which are dangerous in and of themselves – more and more people are fighting these installation initiatives.

Second, there’s a privacy concern.

Anything connected to the “grid” carries the possibility of being hacked by outside forces.

Not only that, but data from your smart meter can tell your utility company details like when you shower, when you sleep, when you’re home vs when you’re out of the house, and more.

How to Get a Smart Meter Removed

You can remove your smart meter yourself and replace it with an analog meter, but you need to talk to your utility company first to avoid any unnecessary fees or legal issues.

You should also take pictures or a video of the entire process to prove to the utility company that you’ve removed and installed the meter correctly.

Before doing so though, I recommend getting help from a consumer organization that assists people with their efforts, since some utility companies will cut off people’s electricity when they remove their meter. One such organization is the Smart Meter Education Network.

ComEd Smart Meter Opt-Out

The Village of Burr Ridge, Illinois, is one of the many areas in the country that has put out information on what to do if you do not want a smart meter installed. and you can get the details here.

For everyone else, you can use their model to address your own city or town and advocate for a similar process to be established in your local area.

Not Sure If You Have One? Here’s How to Identify a Smart Meter

If you have an analog meter with multiple dials on its face with little arrows that move like a clock, it is not a smart meter.

If your meter is digital, it is likely to be a smart meter as well, but there are a few ways to know for sure.

First, check the front of the meter and see if you can find an FCC ID. It will literally say “FCC ID” followed by a string of numbers.

That’s a clear sign it’s smart.

Another thing you can do is do an internet search for the company and model name (as displayed on your meter), plus the words “manual” or “sales information.” Click through and see what you can find. Look for terms like “radio frequency” or “wireless.”

If you try but fail to keep your analog meter, check out my guide on smart meter protection. It goes over about 7 different things you can do to help lower your exposure.

The simplest solution is to get a cover like this one:

My journey to EMF awareness started with a simple internet search:

“Why do my hands tingle when I use my cell phone?”

Annnd then I got lost in the rabbit hole of information. Ha! If you’ve done much reading on cell phone radiation or EMF, you know exactly what I mean by that.

So short answer – yes, EMF & RF from your smartphone can cause discomfort in your hands, BUT I’m not so naïve as to say that’s the only cause. It could actually be many things.

Let’s talk about that today, shall we?

Cell Phone Radiation and Its Effects on Hands

We’ve all heard about the effects of radiation from cell phone use and its possible link to brain cancer, but this type of radiation is also thought to result in pain and soreness in the hand area.

Radiation is essentially energy that travels through space and comes from a particular source.

And when we talk about ‘EMF,’ we’re essentially referring to 3 things – electric field, magnetic field, and radio frequency (RF) radiation.

And get this…your cell phone emits all three of them.

Most are in low “doses” with the exception of the RF radiation, which stems from the phone’s cellular connection.

Each time you use your phone, either for a call or to use the Internet, you are being exposed to RF radiation.

Although the levels are not extremely high (but even that depends on what scale you compare it to), the fact that you’re being exposed so many times a day means that – with time – it has the potential to cause problems.

Think of it like taking an X-ray. If you get an X-ray once a year or once every few years, the amount of radiation is not likely to hurt you.

On the other hand, if you were to get an X-ray every week or even every month, your odds of it being dangerous to you greatly increase. Though certainly a different type of radiation, the cumulative effect is the same with your cell phone.

One of the things that makes cell phone radiation so dangerous is the fact that it comes so close to your body – unlike things such as X-rays, which are usually several feet away. And you’re wearing protective shields…

Because of these factors, cell phone radiation has been linked to various types of hand pain, including sensitivity, muscle pain, tingling, and even joint pain.

In fact, hand pain from cell phone use can often exacerbate any type of arthritis or carpal tunnel pain that you already have.

And it’s not exactly an uncommon problem…

Up to 40% of cell phone users claim they regularly experience some type of hand or finger pain due to using their cell phone so much.

Cell Phone Radiation Symptoms

Radiation from cell phones can cause symptoms that you may seem unrelated at the surface, including but not limited to hand pain. Other symptoms of cell phone radiation exposure include:

Brain fog

Fatigue

Heart palpitations or chest pain

Muscle pain in the hands, wrists, and arms

Skin reactions that include rashes

Sleep problems

Tinnitus

When it comes specifically to your hands, you can experience numerous unpleasant side effects from cell phone radiation, including itchy skin, skin rashes, and even a burning sensation on the palms of your hands.

These same symptoms can appear on your facial area as well, so if you develop any of these things, you may want to take a closer look at your smartphone habits.

Other Reasons for Hand Pain Caused by Cell Phone Use

Of course, cell phone use can cause pain in your hand and wrist area that isn’t related to EMF radiation

With consistent use of your phone, you’re naturally going to increase your risk of having some type of soreness or pain in this area of your body.

Here are a few specific examples of hand pain not caused by EMF:

1. Cell Phone Elbow

Cell phone elbow is a type of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, which occurs when you spend long periods of time on your cell phone.

Experiencing any level of pins and needles from holding a phone is one of the major symptoms, but another symptom is the numbing of your hand, elbow, and arm area.

You can also experience a severe burning or aching sensation, and all of these are caused by constant bending of the elbow as you talk on the phone.

When this happens, the nerve going from your upper to lower arm and around your elbow becomes compressed, causing swelling to occur.

2. Smartphone Pinky

Many people claim that their pinky finger has suffered because of persistent cell phone use, but the truth is, the phenomenon of “smartphone pinky” isn’t officially recognized.

Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t suffer problems with any of your fingers if you are constantly using your cell phone.

Indeed, consistent texting, scrolling, and tweeting can wreak havoc on your fingers, but most experts agree that if you reduce your cell phone use and practice methods such as going hands-free whenever you can, you can greatly reduce any discomfort.

3. Texting Thumb

The term “texting thumb” usually refers to one of two conditions: trigger thumb and thumb arthritis.

The former occurs when the flexor tendon in the thumb is constricted, and the latter when arthritis occurs in the area where the thumb connects to the wrist.

How to Tell When Radiation Is the Culprit Versus Muscle Strain Like “Cell Phone Elbow”

Now that we’ve determined that hand, wrist, and even arm pain can be caused by spending too much time on your cell phone, let’s talk about how to tell whether your pain is coming from EMF radiation or is simply a symptom of repetitive motion.

The main difference is that, with EMF-related pain, you’re very likely going to have at least a few other symptoms related to this type of radiation.

And if you remember from earlier, some of those include:

Headaches

Brain fog

Fatigue

Ringing in the ears

Trouble sleeping

Etc

On the other hand, pain that comes from repetitive motions is going to be more centralized to that one area.

Tingling, pain, sensitivity, and numbness are all possible by overusing your phone. But if you start using hands-free methods and/or reducing the amount of time you spend on it, and you still experience pain, you should definitely see a doctor.

Tips to Reduce Hand Pain From Cell Phone Radiation

If you think your discomfort is caused by EMF, here are a few things you can do to decrease your exposure to phone radiation:

Use the airplane mode feature on your cell phone. Airplane mode is almost like a “sleep” function. It essentially cuts the phone’s communication with nearby devices and towers, eliminating the radiation output.

Use a phone stand and a stylus. When you do this, you can put some distance between you and the phone so that it isn’t right up against your body. This reduces the amount of radiation you’re exposed to and also gives your hand a break from the heat generated by the phone.

Use a speakerphone. Again, this puts some distance between you and the phone, and your hands, wrists, and fingers will thank you for it.

Look for specialized gloves. There are shielded gloves on the market made out of polyester fiber and twisted with silver fibers that significantly reduce the amount of RF that penetrates your hands. And if you ground it with an alligator clip, it’ll protect against electric fields, too.

Don’t text or call when your cell phone is charging. When a cell phone is charging, the strength of its electric and magnetic fields can double. Not good. So unplug it before use.

The main thing you want to remember is to keep some physical distance between you and your phone whenever possible.

Remember the X-ray topic discussed above? It’s the same principle – the less exposure to radiation, the better off you are in the end.

Tips to Reduce Hand Pain From Repetitive Motion and Use

If your hand and wrist pain is simply due to spending too much time on your cell phone and is concentrated on a small area of your hand or arm, spending time not being on your phone can go a long way in helping to get rid of the pain.

If you ever suffer with hand twitches when holding a phone or texting, it could be that once minor symptoms have gotten worse. You should see your care provider first and foremost, but here are some tips to help reduce hand pain related to phone use:

Stretch your fingers, wrist, and forearms, much like you stretch any other muscle.

Switch hands regularly.

Take frequent breaks from the phone.

Try not to use the same muscles for other activities. For example, don’t do a lot of texting and then turn around and play video games.

Try to find a larger cell phone to use.

Use the swipe feature more often.

Use your voice-to-text feature whenever you can to give your fingers a rest.

When texting with both hands, place the phone on a countertop first.

Naturally, limiting your time on a cell phone goes a long way in helping to alleviate pain, whether that pain is coming from the radiation or just from overuse.

In fact, this is a good suggestion for anyone with a phone, even if you’re not experiencing hand pain at the moment.

Because keep in mind, it’s only once you’ve become sensitive to EMF that you feel the effects of it.

Trust me, you don’t ever want to get to that point.

It’s far better to make some minor lifestyle changes now to avoid overexposure and future development of EMF sensitivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can radiation from cell phones cause skin problems?

Yes, it can. These problems can include itchiness, rash, extreme redness, and a burning sensation either on your face or in the palm of your hand.

Will stretching exercises make things better or worse?

Although stretching involves more movement for your hands, some light stretching daily can help hand pain subside quite a bit. When you’re stretching, concentrate on your fingers, hand, wrist, and forearm.

Is there a better way to hold a cell phone to reduce hand pain?

Yes. Try texting with both hands while the cell phone is on a table or countertop. Try to keep your elbow as straight as possible when you’re using your phone, and try to avoid unnatural movements with your thumbs so that the pressure put on them is minimal.

To combat the growing threat of EMF, people have turned to all kinds of methods and equipment that claim to protect against it.

One such method is using EMF protection crystals.

Proponents theorize that using crystals is an effective way to “clear” the EMF that would otherwise be absorbed by your body.

They say some crystals can absorb and dissipate EMF radiation the same way they direct energy.

But the real question is…can they actually do that?

Let’s look at a few of the most popular stones or crystals used in the EMF protection arena, then I’ll discuss my take on them.

Best Crystals for EMF (Supposedly)

Black Tourmaline

Black tourmaline is composed of magnesium, iron, aluminum borosilicates, and other metals.

This crystal is believed to be a grounding stone that can “strengthen the connection between one’s spiritual and physical self.”

That’s why black tourmaline is used to ease physical ailments like arthritis. This crystal doesn’t block EMF as proponents readily admit. However, it’s claimed to make the effects of EMF less stressful on your body by enhancing your own electric field.

Magnetite

One of the symptoms of EMF exposure is fatigue and having aches all over the body. That’s why magnetite is recommended for protective use because this crystal is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties.

This feature can help with muscle pain and further improve blood circulation and asthma recovery.

Now that, I can agree with. Magnet therapy is well-documented, though lacking in randomized controlled trials.

Orgonite

Orgonite is made up of metal shavings, quartz crystals, and resin. Since it contains a bit of quartz, it’s believed to “absorb energies that are out of balance.”

Since electromagnetic energy is a form of, well, energy, some claim that orgonite lessens the effects of EMF and decreases a person’s sensitivity to it.

Pyrite

The reason why some crystal healers recommend pyrite against EMF radiation is that this stone is commonly used to shield a person from environmental pollutants and negative energy.

Proponents claim pyrite can strengthen both the physical well-being and the willpower of the mind.

Malachite

The strongest feature of Malachite is that it’s a fire element. That means that it supposedly can protect the user from different negative energies.

Side Note: Are you seeing a pattern here? Most of these “claims to fame” involve dissolving “negative energies.” And that seems to be the best these crystals offer…

Kernite

Kernite is a Boron-based crystal, which makes it viable for accepting radiation. Kernite is recommended to be placed in an environment that has low-dose nuclear radiation in order to absorb the harmful EMFs.

I saw this openly stated on several websites, but I could not find documented evidence or published studies to back this up.

Hematite

Hematite is mainly known for balancing, grounding, and absorbing negativity. Supporters claim it can be used for detoxification and protection from electromagnetic smog.

Apart from that, hematite is also believed to eliminate negative energies in the body, such as stress and fatigue, which may be symptoms from EMF exposure.

Citrine

Citrine isn’t really famous for preventing EMFs from being absorbed by your body, but it’s mainly known for boosting creativity and clarity.

Some claim the citrine has properties that can aid the physical and emotional body, primarily through improving digestion, boosting metabolism, stimulating optimism, and sharpening decisiveness – all of which is often affected by electrosmog.

How People Use EMF Protection Crystals

Some people believe crystals act as energy stabilizers, which is why they are recommended to be near your body or a source of artificial EMF radiation.

Usually, such EMF (& RF – aka radio frequencies) is strongest in places such as offices, work desks, nightstands, and living areas. These are the places where WiFI routers and gadgets are typically located.

Actually using EMF protection crystals doesn’t require a lot of work. All you have to do is display the crystals in EMF hotspots.

Another common technique is to connect the crystals to a string and wear it as a necklace or bracelet.

The #1 Reason Why I Don’t Think EMF Crystals Work

While such crystals are aesthetically pleasing and great for decor, there are a few reasons why I don’t think they can be trusted to protect you against EMF.

First and foremost, we’re simply far too inundated with radiation from WiFi and electricity to rely on a simple crystal sitting nearby for protection.

Using crystals as a protection strategy is like using a Band-Aid to patch a leaky hole in the ocean floor.

In fact, the effectiveness of crystals isn’t even backed up by scientific evidence, making it seem like users of crystals are merely experiencing a placebo effect.

Second, the results of before and after measurements show that crystals have no effect on lowering the amount of EMF emitted from any give source.

Since there is no change in meter readings, I can’t recommend crystals as a viable protective option.

Here’s my one caveat…

If you could get black tourmaline or even shungite crystals as large as the Stonehenge stones and set up a “wall” between you and an EMF source (like a laptop), then you *might* get some protection.

But since that’s not realistic, your protection efforts are better spent elsewhere.

The Better Approach to EMF Protection

I always opt for solutions that are proven to be effective in lowering EMF your exposure. Such solutions are those you can “see” the effects of thanks to before and after measurements with a meter.

Here are 3 tried-and-true strategies:

1. Elimination

The most effective way to protect yourself from radiation is to get rid of WiFi.

I’m not saying you should chunk your tablets and smartphones, but I do recommend you utilize airplane mode as much as possible. This simple ‘flip of a switch’ eliminates the radio frequency radiation that emits from anything connected wirelessly.

And at home for your desktop or home office, go wired. Trade your WiFi router for a wired router and hook up with ethernet cables.

2. Distance and Duration

Be mindful of how close you are to sources of radiation. The more distance there is between you and the source, the less exposed you are.

Even a small gap can have a tremendous effect on the amount of radiation you absorb.

Aside from distance, be mindful of duration. The effects of EMF are cumulative, so try to decrease the

As much as possible, turn your gadgets off when not in use and don’t keep them close to you.amount of time you spend using wireless devices.

Also, definitely don’t use your laptop on your actual lap.

3. Shielding via Reflection or Absorption

Now when it comes to actual shielding and not just lifestyle changes like distance and duration, you should stick to materials and products that actually absorb or reflect EMF away from your body.

The types of products I recommend include:

I hope that helps you find some more effective alternatives to EMF protection crystals!
